Traditional Marriage: what’s that?
The term “traditional marriage” was always an American term, which has always been viewed as a man and a woman, being happily married and living happily together until death, having beautiful children, and having a steady yearly salary income; that definition may not exist anymore, especially in America. Marriage has become one of the most emotional, and controversial topics of the 21’st century. According to NationMaster.com-“The U.S has the highest divorce rate in the world: 4.95 per 1,000 people.” But why is our country on the top of the list; “would making stricter laws or rules on marriage lead to a lower divorce rate, or would it end up having less married couples?” Other countries, especially small countries have a very low divorce rate. The revolution of marriage is changing rapidly, in America for social reasons, and maybe economic reasons. Is the institution of marriage growing stronger or weaker in the United States, than it has been in the last say… 30 years? It has gotten weaker and there are many reasons why I support this hypothesis, many young people are rushing into marriage, despite dating for a brief amount of time, and many young couples are marrying at young ages, and all ready having children; despite having knowledge on the consequences to marriage or child bearing. Another reason to why is couples may not know how to fight properly. People don’t take marriage seriously, because there are not as many rules or regulations as there once was. And another reason couples end up in divorce court is because they wait to long to configure their problems.
For a lot of countries outside the U.S. marriage is a very strict subject. Some countries, especially in the Eastern Hemisphere, believe that a woman doesn’t have a right to choose whom she wants to marry such as China, India and most countries in the Middle East. Also most places in the Middle East have arranged marriages. In the Eastern Hemisphere in countries such as China and India they use a very popular form of marriage called polygamy, in which one man can marry as many women as he wishes. According to omg-facts.com, there are still two places in the world where divorce is forbidden-such as the Vatican City, and the Philippines. But other countries have a lower divorce rate than the U.S. is because other places are much restrictive on the topic of marriage. People are much more cautious about getting married, in marriage strict countries; because citizens of other countries where marriage is a controversial topic know the consequences to getting married much more than many Americans. The reason for is that some countries especially in the Eastern hemisphere have low divorce rates. Is because marriage is such a conservative topic, also for many countries and cultures its religiously controversial-like Mexico, Italy, Saudi Arabia and almost every other country, besides the U.S.
The reason the U.S. has a high marriage and divorce rate than it did thirty years ago. Is because its too easy to get married in America now; according to a website US Marriage Laws.com most states don’t contain many rules or obligations about marriage. The U.S. is a nation of highly independent people and in my opinion that independence that it’s citizen covet stands in the way of us being able to humble ourselves and ask for help. A lot of married couples don’t know how to fight properly and that’s the problem. According to MarriageLaws.com-the only prohibitions most states have about marriage is that both patrons must be at least 18 years of age, and possess a legal id. If under the age of 18 parental figures or guardians over the age of 18 must be present at the time. Having few rules and regulations is causing more marital problems, such as marital affairs, or divorces. People in the U.S. don’t seem to understand anymore that marriage is a serious commitment, and choice a choice that should be taken with extreme care. Another related reason to divorce is high; is because couples may be treating their spouses as co-workers rather than marital figures. For example according to a question on Ask.com: a user asked, “My husband just lost his job, should I leave him?” and what was surprising was that a lot of the answers were negative towards the husband. One commenter wrote, “If he cant find a job within two weeks, then you should consider moving on.“ some couples, not all don’t support each other properly. And that’s another reason why divorces happen regularly. Another marital problem related with lack of support, is lack of respect as in couples don’t treat each other accordingly. For cases such as domestic abuse, and affairs; affair rates are high because couples aren’t spending enough time together, or aren’t being intimate with one another. Couples are getting divorced because when they are having problems they may not find solutions, or refuse to get counseling.
Every country and every person has a different viewpoint on the topic; few cultures and countries believe marriage should be between two people who love each other and can both raise a kid Most countries besides the United States, have strict rules and regulations when it also many countries have a low divorce rate, however for example according to Stephanie Coontz in the Evolution of Matrimony: The Changing Social Context of Marriage-“The country of Chile is the only country in the western hemisphere that still prohibited divorce entirely…from 1990 to 2004- though between those years the marriage rate dropped from 1990 to 2003 from 100 thousand, to 60 thousand a year and nearly half of children born in Chile were born to unmarried couples (476).” Chile had a default in marriages for 13 years was because the people of Chile knew the risks and consequences to getting married.
Another reason the divorce rate is so high is because many couples are getting married at a young age, and already having children despite having a bad financial foundation. According to a website marriage101.org, “70 percent of couples divorce in there 20’s.” The reason why many married youngsters’ divorce is because they don’t have a solid financial foundation thus that can lead to marital problems like fighting, and affairs. Also some young married couples aren’t completely mature or know the consequences put upon marriage-or when it comes to having a baby. According to About.com, many young couples end up in divorce court because they don’t know how to fight properly. Many couples of the new generation in America may be overlooking the consequences when getting married, and rushing into it. Divorce rates are so high is because many of Americans don’t know consequences to getting married because they aren’t told the risks. Or at least look at the consequences that hold when they want to get married, because there aren’t many rules or regulations that apply to marriage in most states in America that forbid young couples from getting married.
America has such a high marriage rate, though such a high divorce rate. Maybe the reason for this is because America is such a flexible place, people who come to America are given the right to do whatever they want, and I believe that’s one of the problems. There aren’t as many rules and regulations to getting married as there was back then in the 60’s, and I believe that’s the problem citizens in the U.S. have. Some young couples that are married may not take it seriously because there aren’t any rules or regulations, and that’s what’s causing many marital problems like cheating, and divorce. People don’t take marriage for grant it any more, which is why there are so many affairs. These are the reasons why the U.S. has such a high divorce then ever.
